Lake Monticello Owners’ Association (LMOA) has taken a position in opposition to the application by Aqua Virginia to increase its water and sewer rates. In November 2011, Aqua Virginia filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for a statewide increase averaging 9.9%. The increase for Lake Monticello residents would be more than 13% for water and more than 11% for sewer. The application comes just months after Aqua Virginia attempted to impose ownership of grinder pumps onto homeowners. Aqua Virginia‘s last rate increase was approved in October 2010.

The rate increase hearing will be held on June 19 in Richmond. The LMOA will be represented by legal counsel Frank Buck. Earlier this year, the LMOA Board of Directors appointed an ad hoc committee to study the rate case in preparation for the hearing. The committee developed a plan for members to collectively and individually express their opposition to the rate increase through a letter-writing campaign and petition drive.

LMOA has posted on its website at sample letters and contact information for the SCC and local representatives to the VA House of Delegates and Senate. The letters are basic and leave space for members to insert their personal comments. Also on the website is a list of talking points for those who wish additional information to include in their letters. Important: All letters to the SCC must clearly include the Case # PUE - 2011-00099. Letters must be received by the SCC by June 12.

Petitions must be returned by June 6 to the LMOA Office at 41 Ashlawn Boulevard, Lake Monticello, VA 22963.
