LaVere ShultzLaVere A. “Larry” Shultz, 87, of Lake Monticello, Va., passed away after a brief illness at Martha Jefferson Hospital on March 27, 2017.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 55 years, Marjorie M. (Black) Shultz, on September 29, 2011.

Larry was born in Sharon, Conn., but raised in Sturgis, Mich., by his parents Albert and Letha (Grove) Shultz. After high school, he graduated from Coyne Electrical and Radio School in Chicago, Ill. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953. He began his career working for the civil service at Bendix in Indiana and in 1967 moved to Hampton, Va., to work at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station as a quality assurance specialist.

After 30 years of service, he and Marjorie retired to Lake Monticello. They enjoyed many wonderful years at the lake.

Larry enjoyed involvement in his church and community. In Indiana he was a volunteer firefighter and served as chief for a year. He sang in barber shop quartet and church choir, played drums in a senior band, and belonged to the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Lake Monticello Amateur Radio Group.

He is survived by a son Michael Shultz of Lake Monticello; a daughter Sally Caffrey and her husband, Doug, of Grantham, N.H.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Caffrey of Orlando, Fla., Mary Caffrey and Samuel Caffrey of Grantham, N.H. Also surviving are three siblings, a sister Rosemary Kyle of New Concord, Ohio, a brother Cleon Shultz of Sturgis, Mich., and another brother Keith Shultz of Howe, Ind.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017, at Meadows Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Va.
