Patricia AdamsPatricia A. Adams, 89, passed away on Aug. 28, 2017. She was born in New York City but spent most of her adult life in Portsmouth and Charlottesville, Va.  She was the daughter of the late Cyril and Helen Arnold and was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert W. Adams.

Pat graduated from William and Mary College in 1949 with a degree in sociology. Her first job after graduating was as a first grade teacher in Henrico County for three years. After raising her children she returned to the public schools as a librarian at Park View Elementary in Portsmouth where she served for 10 years.

Pat was an avid reader and supporter of our public libraries. She also loved gardening, arranging flowers, traveling and cooking. She was involved in many social and philanthropic clubs including the Portsmouth Service League, PEO, and Daughters of American Revolution.  She loved history and spent many years as a docent at Monticello.

While attending William and Mary she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Adams. They were married for 62 years and had five children. They raised their children in Portsmouth but moved to Charlottesville when they retired and spent many happy years at Lake Monticello.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lynn Hostetler (John), Jeff Adams (Carol), Beth Reitz (Danny), Bruce Adams (Denise) and Amy Conner (Craig); 10 wonderful grandchildren, Brian, Katie, Molly, Ross, Kelly, Morgan, Chris, Lucas, Clay and Sadie; two great-grandchildren, Sofie and Maddox; and a brother, Jeff Arnold (Paula).

The family extends their deep appreciation and gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff at Granny’s Place in Deep Creek. Tammy Bruan and the rest of the staff provided a truly loving “home” for Pat’s last few years of life.

A celebration of life was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at Messiah United Methodist Church, 408 Dominion Blvd S. Chesapeake, Va., 23322.
