Two Lake Monticello golfers made shots to remember

Longtime Lake Monticello golfer Bobby Gonsalves made a spectacular,  rare albatross (double-eagle) on April 3. Gonsalves posted a 2 on the par-5, 18th at the Lake, considered one of the more challenging finishing holes in the area, according to the Daily Progress.

Looking back at Fluvanna sports 2012

Transition and tradition are the words that are most applicable to the Fluvanna County sports scene in the year 2012. A very big transition that occurred in 2012 was the move by Fluvanna County High School to new and modern facilities. The football team is no longer playing on an iffy natural turf field at Costello Stadium. It opened its new very modern home, Phil Browning Stadium, at the new very modern high school with a win over Prince Edward County on an artificial turf field.

Friendship Tennis Academy’s 10 and under tennis team.Friendship Tennis Academy 10 and under intermediate tennis team finished its six week participation in Charlottesville Area Tennis Team Competition finishing third in the league. Team members Emily Smeds, Billy Ruffa, Tyler Ackenbom, Christopher Blanchard, Carolina and Joseph Gomez practiced hard all season and played six matches against Charlottesville teams that included Boar’s Head, ACAC and Glenmore.

The Fluvanna Xtreme travel baseball team

The Fluvanna Xtreme travel baseball team ranked in first place in the Virginia 13UAA division for the fall season. The team ranked first among 76 Virginia travel teams in what was its first season as a travel team.  The players included  Austin Brown, Nate Cantu, Trent Campbell, Josh Carlton, Jacob Critzer, Colby Deforge, Dakota Goolsby, Jack Kershner, Jerry Kidd, Chris Newton and Brad Wiley. They are managed by Brian Newton and coaches Beau Campbell, Chris Critzer, Shannon Goolsby and Nick Kershner. – Contributed by Brian Newton

The U12 Fluvanna Youth Soccer Association girls’ team

The U12 Fluvanna Youth Soccer Association girls’ team won the Skyline U12 bracket. The team upset the first place team on Saturday (Nov. 10) then beat Augusta County on Sunday to take first place.

The team is coached by Chris Buck and Tom Beckham. Pam Buck is the team manager. Team members include Mckenzie Wills, Brooke Nazar, Maddie Nazar, Mya Wright, Sammi Marlowe, Hannah Brown, Sammi Marshall, Abby Searcy, Bree Hamlin, Ashlee Pieno and Olivia Feria.
