Let's Do Lunch

Michie Tavern’s traditional Southern food Photo courtesy of Michie TavernBecause I write a column that reviews restaurants, everyone thinks that I eat out all the time. Nothing could be further from the truth. Both my husband and I are excellent cooks and we enjoy experimenting with new recipes and preparing favorite dishes. Unfortunately that means that I sometimes compare our own dishes to ones served at restaurants, and often, they just don’t measure up. So I am very choosy about the places that I eat at and those that I recommend.

Today’s column combines the new - Greenock Bistro just opened for business six months ago, and the old - a lovely old farmhouse built in 1864 filled with interesting antiques at a beautiful, country setting.

Two months ago I received an email from my friend Patsy, informing me that she and her husband had just enjoyed a delicious lunch at Doughboy Market & Bakery. She suggested that I review it for this column and I am so glad that she did. As I did not care for the previous market and bakery (Breadboy) I had not noticed the change of name, chef, and improvement in the variety and quality of the food offered. It is too bad that the names are so similar and can be confusing. After several visits and input from others in the community, I am finally prepared to provide my readers with several reasons to visit Doughboy, a new market (think deli/bistro) and bakery with a young, enthusiastic and enterprising chef.

By now, everyone has watched Charlottesville’s expansion of stores, restaurants and a multiplex movie theater (finally) at the Shops at Stonefield on the corner of Hydraulic Road and Rt. 29. This is what you call an abundance of riches for someone like myself as I look for good places to eat lunch and write about in the Let’s Do Lunch column. So expect to see some reviews of new restaurants at Stonefield in 2013, starting with Burtons Grill. Recently, two people approached me about reviewing Burtons Grill and I am so glad they did.
