The supervisors 3-2 vote last month to cut the school budget – which for a while threatened to leave the new high school shuttered – has spurred a new activism in Fluvanna County.

Informal groups calling themselves Save our Schools, Focus on Fluvanna’s Future, Fluvanna United and the Fluvanna Taxpayers Watchdog Association have sprung up seemingly overnight to promote their messages.

The following students have earned Principal’s List (All A’s) or A and B honor roll for the fourth nine weeks of the 2011-12 school year at Fluvanna Middle School. Lake candidatesLake Monticello Owners Association members will vote for two new board members on June 30. Running for the two seats are Dick Cummings, Page Gifford and Charles Harrelson. The election will fill vacancies created by the expiration of the second three-year term of Don Fickes and the vacant term created by the resignation of Benita Ellen in January.

Judy Ruch, Dottie Kirklee, Randolph Lanford and Emily Gordon.In honor of National Garden Week, the Fluvanna Garden Club presented its annual Dogwood Award for civic beautification by a business to Dr. Randolph E. Lanford in Fork Union.

The award, for his civic beautification of the Fork Union Medical Associates, was given on June 6.

George Tyler and two puppies.Every year, Caring For Creatures, opens up the sanctuary and welcomes visitors to come and learn more about the no-kill facility. Saturday (June 9) marked the annual open house and this year the memory garden was dedicated.

The crowd was small but supportive of all the work Mary Birkholz and the volunteers have done through the years, beginning with Birkholz and her partner Amy, a loyal German Shepherd, who first opened CFC’s doors in 1988.
