Helen Lee Jones, 90, college art professor

Ms. Jones was born and grew up in Philadelphia, PA. Her French mother met her father when he was stationed in Europe with the Army during World War I. She was predeceased by both her parents, Suzanne and Julian, and by her sister, Francoise Jones of Chestnut Hill, PA.

Helen Lee received B.A. and M.F.A. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, and also attended Moore College of Art, Philadelphia. She taught art and art history at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA., for many years. She also taught at Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, MD., for 12 years.

Helen Lee had a long interest in art of South East Asia and did many paintings in her travels. In 1965, she was awarded a Fulbright Grant (summer) for travel to India. From 1968 to 1969, she traveled and painted in India and many other South East Asian countries on a one-year Wilson-Ford Foundation grant. Her work has appeared in exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey.

In addition to her travels to Asia and Europe, Helen Lee enjoyed many summers at her family’s home in Palmyra, VA.

She is survived by several cousins and a niece.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 27th, 2012, at the Jones family plot in the Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.
