Fluco ceremony highlights outstanding athletes

Fluco golf coach Brian Searcy noted that although his squad did not have a lot of success in winning matches, his players performed well and most will be returning next season. He noted that for the first time the golf team was co-ed. He also pointed out that the Flucos hosted the Jefferson District year end tournament this year at the Lake Monticello golf course.

Julia Hogue, coach of the competition cheer squad reported that her team had “an amazing season.” She noted that her team practiced “long and hard” for its competitions. And, although this team had nine seniors, the coaches and returning cheer squad members are looking forward to the future. Like the golf team, the cheer squad hosted the Jefferson District competition.

Football Coach Jason Barnett reported that this year’s squad was proud to record a win in the first game ever played at the new Phil Browning stadium. He noted that two of the Flucos were elected to the All-Jefferson District first team: sophomore tight end Jalen Harrison and senior linebacker Devin Goode. Goode also was selected as defensive player of the year in the Jefferson District. Second team All-Jefferson District honors went to: junior lineman Josh Wheaton, senior defensive back Joey Shaheen, senior running back Jovan Burton, sophomore special team specialist RyQuane Washington and senior lineman Cody Childers

Christi Harlowe, who was named Jefferson District Coach of the Year in volleyball, reported on her team’s outstanding season. Harlowe’s squad finished the season with a 17-8 record and they were runners-up in Jefferson District competition. The team was quite young and it had a freshman and a sophomore win All-Jefferson District honors.

Freshmen Kate Stutz was second team All-District and sophomore Maddy Kline was first team All-District. Junior Emily Haden was also second team All-District. These three outstanding athletes will all be back next season. However, Harlowe will be losing senior Hannah Miller who shoes will be hard to fill. Harlowe gave special recognition to Miller, who broke multiple Fluco volleyball records during her career, records that were set by some outstanding volleyballers who preceded Miller. Miller was named to the first team All-Jefferson District and to the first team All-Region II team.
