Lady Fluco runners make it to states

After phenomenal performances across the board (including having two girls running in the Top 15) the Lady Flucos earned themselves their first states berth in school history.

“It’s been such a great experience making history with my teammates these past two years,” said senior captain Stephanie Bossong. “Making it to states as a team was the best ending to my last cross country season that I could have asked for.”

In the state meet, the Flucos sported an 8th place finish, just 19 points behind rival Western Albemarle. The three-headed monster of Nicole Douma, Devon Burger, and Bossong all placed in the top 40, led by Douma’s 21st place showing.

“This season has been the most unforgettable cross country season I’ve had,” said Douma. “I’m so blessed to share these experiences with such awesome girls. We finally reached our goal and we have our coach [Rose Brogan] to thank for it.”

The girls weren’t the only Flucos to take to the trails at the state championships. Senior Chris Markham closed out his high school career in his second straight state meet. The senior ran a personal record of 16:34 and placed 26th out of the thick AA field which consisted of 142 harriers.

“Chris has been an amazing team captain and finishes his high school cross country career with a great run. I could not ask more as a coach. It has been truly a pleasure to coach all the young men on the team,” said the boys’ Head Coach Tom Casto.

The life as a cross country runner is a tough one where glory is hard to come by. This year, Fluvanna has proven that it’s all worth it in the end.
