Fluco girls’ win one, boys lose two at swim meet

The Jefferson District’ swim meet was held Thursday (Dec. 13) at the Estes Sports Complex on the campus of the Fork Union Military Academy.

Before the meet boys’ coach Jimmie Small commented that the boys team is quite small in number of swimmers, which will make it difficult for the team to win against deeper teams like Monticello and Western Albemarle. The girls’ team has a lot more swimmers and hopes to hold its own in Jefferson District competition.

In this three way meet, the Flucos had some stand out performers. Jonas Solga led the boys’ team with winning performances in the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter butterfly. His times in these events were 26.82 and 1:10.38 respectively. Also capturing a first place for the boys, was Bryce Campanelli, who won the one meter diving event with a score of 265.80 more than 54 points better than the second place finisher.

The boys also recorded a first place finish in the 200 meter freestyle relay. Their first place team consisted of: Lucas Reynard, Chase Karaca, Phillipe Smith and Chris Presley. This team finished in a time of 1:18.31, more than 30 seconds ahead of the second place team. The boys’ team recorded only one second place finish. Alex Sprouse swam to second place in the 100 meter breaststroke.

The girls’ team had only on individual first place finisher. Allysa McIver swam to victory in the long and grueling 400 meter event. She finished in 5:26.86, winning by approximately 11 seconds. The depth of the girls team was demonstrated by the number of second place finishes the team recorded. Lauren Cabrera took second place in the 50 meter freestyle event, missing first place by less than a second. Kelsey Schlein was second in the one meter diving event, while Carly Csapo was the second place finisher in the 100 meter butterfly. Annabelle Harlowe was the second place finisher in the 100 meter breaststroke.

The Fluco girls’ team also took second place in the 200 meter medley relay and the 400 meter freestyle relay. The medley relay team was composed of: Alena Billingsley, Hannah Corbin, Carly Csapo, and Lauren Cabrera. The freestyle relay team consisted of: Hannah Corbin, Kayla Corredera-Wells, Alyssa McIver and Carly Csapo.

Third place finishers for the boys and girls were: Alex Sprouse in the 200 meter freestyle, Jake Bunomo in the 100 meter freestyle, Ashton Stevens in the one meter dive, and Miriam Lokits in the 100 meter backstroke.

The swim team is now off for the holiday season. They will be back in action in a two day event at the FUMA pool on Jan. 4 and 5. They then swim in the Ben Hair memorial event at the University of Virginia on Jan. 9, which will be followed by another Jefferson District event on Jan. 15, when they host a dual meet with Louisa High.

The year end Jefferson District meet will be held at the FUMA pool on Feb. 2, and the Region II meet will also be held at FUMA, on Feb. 9.
