Rain presents no problem for Lake’s July 4 run and swim

 

On the men’s side of the race the outcome was absolutely no surprise.  Matt Barresi won the event for the 14th time. He finished the approximately three-mile run in a very impressive time of 16:50. Barresi, who is originally from the Columbia, Md., area, ran cross country and track in college at American University.

On the women’s side the winner, Emily Bascom, also ran cross country and track in college. She is originally from the Louisville, Ky., area and ran for the University of Louisville. She reports that after five children she is now back to running.

Although there was some heavy rain in the area in the early afternoon, the Lake Monticello authorities held their breath and waited with regard to the swim across the lake. They were awarded with a break in the rain and the swim took place with no rain falling. At 3 p.m. 92 swimmers took to the water. Leading a number of strong female swimmers was Caylyn McNaul, who was the first swimmer to finish. McNaul is a rising junior who swims for the Fluco swim team and for the Lake Monticello Sharks.

The winner on the men’s side was Raymond Long, who had a busy day. In the morning he was the first place winner in the 18-30 age group of the Spirit 5K run.
