Nowadays the trend is to restore rundown neighborhoods in cities and to renovate old historic buildings in rural areas. Scottsville, an example of the little town that could, has seen a new Renaissance in its downtown area. It takes businesses, realtors and town leaders to come up with a vision that defines their future. With the right timing, an area sees renewal.
“The place has not been well-maintained for many years,” said Flynn. “We purchased the place in January and began working on Village Station shortly thereafter. We’ve installed a women’s restroom, new water lines and new gutters, secured the front porches, repaired some roofing, did the first stage of grade work on the upper parking and driveway area, begun repairs on the front of the building – the street side – and started painting.”
They have also helped the five new tenants get their spaces ready for their new business ventures. Now there are eight businesses in Village Station.
“Our number one goal is to help our community by giving individuals a chance to start their own business,” said Flynn. “We are able to help new business owners get started with a low overhead cost by keeping our rents reasonable. We hope to give the residents of Fluvanna County a reason to visit the village of Palmyra more often.”
Among the businesses is The Golden Fish, owned by Charlotte Broxson, a former art teacher turned entrepreneur.
“We carry artisan goods, handmade fused glass jewelry, lovely handmade baby items, and more from local craftspeople, as well as really interesting vintage items, some antiques, and art,” said Broxson. “I also rehab furniture and give it new life. I have a soft spot for kids and have some fantastic developmental and educational previously-owned toys. My prices are extremely reasonable.”
Broxson’s shop is located on the upper level of Village Station, and her renovations are complete. Her store is painted bright red and greets the customer with vintage charm. The Golden Fish is open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Call 434-249-6767 for more information.
Still working on her renovations is Nazifa Shakeri, owner of Lily’s Home Decor & Gifts. “We will be selling new and used merchandise, including small area rugs, wall art, small furniture and more,” said Shakeri.
Also selling a variety of new and used items is Pam Holloman of Hidden Treasures Flea Market. If you’re looking for a chair in the shape of a shoe or just looking for a simple table to paint bright yellow, it may be hidden at Holloman’s shop. The shop is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 434-981-9542.
Other tenants include Unique Creations Hair Salon (434-589-9089), All Pawz, a full service pet grooming spot (434-960-2767), and John’s Paint & Body Shop (434-589-3126). More tenants are signing up.
“We have plenty more to do, but we’ve gotten off to a pretty good start,” said Flynn.
