On Sept. 13 the Lake Monticello ladies had their annual combined event, with the nine-hole group and the 18-hole group playing in the same match for the only time during the season. Winning this competition was the team of Barb Scanlon, Cathy Morrell, Doris Gardner and Marilyn Payne. They shot a net 25 for the nine-hole contest. Second place went to the team of Debbie Burke, Mary Rausa, Laura Moon and Beverly Wormuth, who came in with a score of 28.
On Sept. 10 the Lions Club held its 18th annual tournament at the Lake course. Ron Whatley said that this tournament was in honor of Jim Frawley, a founding member of the local club, who died recently. These tournaments are the club’s major fundraiser, said Whatley, A number of businesses pay to sponsor holes, which creates revenue for the club. The Lions organization has always been interested in helping the vision impaired, and the local group funds a program that provides eyeglasses to needy individuals in the county.
This year the Lions’ tournament had 10 teams: eight men’s teams and two women’s teams. The tournament was played in a captain’s choice format. The winners in the men’s gross score competition were the team of Claude Williamson, Richard Condrey, Ken Zadoyko and Everette Horton. They shot a 57 gross. Second place went to the team of Rick Chiovaro, Phil Skeps, Terry Heyer and Craig Lounsbury.
The winning team in the net score competition was the team of Joe Richardson, Karry Edwards, Ron Schneck and Barclay Roman. Their net score was 48. Second place in the net score competition went to the team of Mark Clark, Eric Clark, Tom Whitney and Billy Martin. On the women’s side, Florann Burnett, Carolyn Zadoyko, Edwina Heyer and Lisa Lounsbury had the best net score with 63, while the team of Alice Flanders, Barbara Senig, Sylvia Frawley and Joan Hansen had the best gross with an 80.
Also on Sept. 15 the Jefferson District high school golf tournament was played over the Lake Monticello course. Eight teams participated and the local Fluvanna High School team, under the direction of Coach Bryan Searcy, finished in sixth place. The team was led in this match by sophomore Joe Pace who played very consistently, carding 42 on the front and the back for an impressive 84. Sophomore Jack Kershner was next for the Flucos with a 92, while senior Jack Stanke and junior Ethan Yancey came in at 95.
As fall begins, activity at the Lake Monticello course will not be dropping off. On Sept. 18 the course hosted the couple’s championship competition for members. This Sunday (Sept. 25) the course will host the J.D. Dickinson Memorial Golf Tournament, which will have a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Then on Sept. 29 the Lake Monticello senior men will host the senior men from Spring Creek golf course, who will be looking to avenge their recent home loss to the Lake Monticello senior men.
On Oct. 2 the Fluvanna County athletics department will conduct its annual Phil Browning Memorial Tournament. This will be a captain’s choice contest. On Oct. 8 Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity will hold its annual golf tournament on the Lake Monticello course.
