Girls’ coach Rose Brogan will have Haney and a number of promising runners back next year, while boys’ coach Tom Casto will have all his top runners back next season.
The Fluco volleyball team’s season came to an end on Oct. 31 when the squad fell 0-3 to the Fort Defiance High team in a Conference quarterfinals match played at Fort Defiance. Coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett had a mix of seniors and underclassmen on her roster. She will have a solid number of returnees next year. This year’s team had something of an up and down season, finishing just south of .500.
The Fluco golf team completed its season over a month ago. The team was led by senior Jack Stanke, but several underclassmen made important gains over the course of the season under the tutelage of Coach Bryan Searcy.
Football has always been the big high school sport on the fall calendar. Unfortunately, the Flucos have not been able to generate much success on the gridiron recently. This season, Coach Steve Szarmach’s team managed to record a win in the team’s first home game of the season, but it was the only victory of the year. On Friday (Nov. 4), the season ended with a 0-36 loss at Orange County High.
A number of seniors worked hard all year for Szarmach. Senior Mark Grooms turned in some very impressive offensive performances before his season was shut down due to injury. Senior Jordan Melton took most of the snaps from then on, and was a hard runner from the quarterback position. Senior running back and linebacker Craig Russo also was a “fierce competitor,” said Szarmach. Senior lineman Jake Morris and Chase Payne were team captains throughout the year.
