Nancy Avers, of Palmyra, Va., died on Aug. 9, 2018, at the Hospice of the Piedmont Center for Acute Hospice Care in Charlottesville from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was born in Baltimore, Md., on June 5, 1942, to the late Stanley Louis Konski and Gladys Reeves Konski.Nancy is survived by her husband, Carl Dennison (Denny) Avers, her guardian angel and the love of her life; a cherished and devoted daughter, Sherry Ann Sparrow; her son-in-law William McSweeney; and her loving sister-in-law Margaret (Peggy) Boisvert Konski, widow of her late brother S. Joseph Konski.
She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1961. Her career was in commissioned furniture sales at Woodward & Lothrop and Bloomingdales where she met her husband-to-be Denny. Married since 1981, they enjoyed a wonderful life together. Nancy and Denny traveled the world. Each year, she and her daughter Sherry would venture off on a Mother’s Day trip, seeing the sights of America and going to concerts.
After leaving Woodies, she and her daughter operated a hair salon and consignment shop in Annandale, Va. For three years prior to moving to Lake Monticello in 2002, she was a civilian coordinator for the United States Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots program based in Quantico, Va. Nancy was an associate member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, Scottsville Chapter, where she held the position of poetry chairman. She was also a former member of The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, House of Burgesses Chapter, and National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, Colonel Joshua Fry Chapter, where she was one of the founding members.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the superb and caring doctors and staff at the University of Virginia Medical Center and the Hospice of the Piedmont. Nancy was especially grateful for the never ending support and prayers of dear friends; and the inspiration of Pastors Ken Albright and Paul St. Clair of Grace and Glory Lutheran Church, where a celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 16.
On Saturday, Aug. 18, services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 76 N. Davis Street, Keyser, W.Va., with Pastor Sally Bartling officiating. Interment will follow at Queens Point Cemetery, Keyser, where Nancy will be buried near Denny’s parents.
