A Mechanicsville man accused in a June arson attempt was indicted by a Fluvanna County grand jury Wednesday (Dec. 19) on three counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of arson, and use of a false ID.

Cole Spencer Augustus Carter, 26, is accused of having have set fire to a home on Miles Jackson Road in Palmyra early in the morning of June 3, 2018.

The three people inside the home at the time escaped without serious injury, although the home itself sustained heavy damage. The occupants quickly named Carter as the man they believe set the blaze, and he was taken into custody by Fluvanna County deputies later that day.

Carter is also facing a half-dozen violations of protective orders and a charge of breaking and entering.

He is currently being held at Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange County. Carter will return to court for arraignment on all 10 charges Jan. 25.
