Roy Warren Schurmann, 89, passed away peacefully at home March 11, 2019, from glioblastoma brain cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Frederick Schurmann; his brother, Bob Schurmann and his wife, Audrey; his brother, Ralph; many aunts, uncles, cousins and nephew, Scott Wedell.
Roy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Marj) Wedell Schurmann; his son, Jeff Schurmann; his daughter, Christa Schurmann (Vincent Colicchio); grandsons Christian and Myles Schurmann-Colicchio; niece Lesley Schurmann (Kip Kolesinskas); nephew Stuart Schurmann (Karen Heard); and cousin Linda Miller.
Born in Queens, N.Y., on Feb. 5, 1930, Roy graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, Concordia Junior College, Colgate University and Wharton Business School.
After living in New York, Texas and New Jersey, Roy and Marj lived at Lake Monticello for 24 years until they moved to Gainesville, Va., last July.
Roy was a proud New York Yankees, Giants and Ranger fan.
Roy was involved in church leadership at every church he attended and was an active member of American Legion Post 2003. After retiring he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the University of Virginia Medical Center. Most recently he enjoyed organizing a poker group at his new home
Roy and Marj loved to entertain, with the Schurmann family reunions among his favorite memories.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held at Grace and Glory Lutheran Church in Palmyra, Va., on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at 2 p.m. with family visitation at 1 p.m. A private interment will be held at Culpeper Veterans Cemetery in Culpeper, Va., at a later date.
