Firefighters combating a blaze at 4 Roadview Terrace in Lake Monticello discovered the body of a man inside, according to the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.

Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue and other area fire departments responded to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 3) after the blaze was reported at 3:17 p.m.

The body was discovered by firefighters and was later transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond. Authorities believe the man is one of the homeowners, but it may take several weeks to make a positive identification through DNA analysis, according to the sheriff’s office.

Crews from multiple agencies worked to extinguish the fire, but the house was severely damaged.

No suspects are sought in connection with fire or the death, and there is no threat to public safety, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police are investigating the scene. It will take several weeks to obtain lab results and finalize the fire cause and origin investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

“The family requests privacy during this tragic time in their lives,” wrote Capt. David Wells of the sheriff’s office in a press release. “They also request that members of the media and the general public please stay off their property.”
