Eugene (Gene) Fredrick Deiner

Beloved partner Eugene F. Deiner, 88, died Friday morning, May 3, 2019, at Hospice of the Piedmont following an extended illness. A resident of Palmyra, Va., he was born in Erie, Penn., on Sept. 7, 1930. He was the son of the late Charles Deiner and Winifred Schaefer Deiner Wingerter and stepson of the late Henry Wingerter. Having graduated from Gannon University in 1971 with a B.S. in management science, Gene enjoyed a distinguished career in product marketing and management as well as project management. He worked at NCR and AT&T Headquarters, Basking Ridge, N.J., for 26 years before retiring in 1995. As a young man, he played an active role as an altar boy at St. John’s Church in Erie, Penn., and was an avid track and high hurdling athlete. Gene was an avid reader and a lover of fine art. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never met an ice cream he didn’t like. In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles and George R. Deiner, as well as his loyal dog, Penny. Survivors include his long-time companion of 27 years, Myrna A. Levine, and her children, along with several beloved nieces and nephews. To quote his high school yearbook, “Our Gene, he’s a handsome lad, he’s always happy, never sad.” Truer words have never been spoken. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at U.Va. Continuum and Albemarle Rehab as well as U.Va. and Martha Jefferson Hospitals. Interment will be done privately at Trinity Cemetery in Erie, Penn., on May 24, 2019. Memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to All Blessings Flow at 2335 Seminole Lane Suite 2000, Charlottesville, Va., 22901 or Caring for Creatures at 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, Va., 22963.
