Press release
The Fluvanna Historical Society is celebrating the 23rd annual Old Farm Day community festival on Saturday (May 4) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m/ at Pleasant Grove Park in Palmyra.
New this year is the tasting garden, where visitors will be able to sample wines from local vineyards Cunningham Creek and Thistle Gate; beer from James River Brewing Company, and apple cider from Castle Hill. Old Farm Day Committee co-chair Jackie Bland is excited to welcome the local vineyards, brewery, and cidery to Old Farm Day. “These community-based businesses are representative of Fluvanna’s current growth in agribusiness,” Bland said. “It just makes sense to include them in a festival that celebrates our agricultural heritage.”
Visitors to Old Farm Day can view the award-winning Farm Heritage Museum building, and museum curator Betty McGehee is happy to welcome visitors to preview the exhibit of antique and vintage agricultural equipment. “Although all of the collection is not yet installed, we are certain visitors will learn a great deal about this community’s agricultural heritage from what we do have in place,” she said, adding that she hopes visitors will be inspired to return for the museum’s grand opening, slated for the spring of 2020.
Family favorites, including a variety of food trucks, fantastic live music, the pie contest, and the pink cotton candy lady return this year. “Many of us have come to Old Farm Day every year for 23 years,” said event co-chair Tricia Johnson. “With over 140 vendors, artists and craftspeople, community groups and agencies, as well as individuals selling all sorts of products, there is something sure to please every visitor. Old Farm Day has many activities for children too, including horse-drawn hay rides, a petting zoo and pony rides, barrel train rides, fire engines and farm equipment to explore, wildlife from the Virginia State Parks, crafts, seed-planting, and much more.”
