Press release
The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call Tuesday (June 25) at 3:05 p.m. about a man boating on the James River near Bremo Bluff who appeared to have some sort of medical emergency and fell off his boat into the water. Rescue units and law enforcement from multiple agencies responded to the area. Units were able to locate the man in the river and extricate him but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead on scene. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time.
As this appears to be an unattended death that occurred on the James River rather than a boating related death, the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office is the responsible investigating agency as that portion of the James River is located within Fluvanna County.
Based on the scene and witness statements, foul play is not suspected and the death appears to be natural. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has declined the case.
