Lake Monticello food drive nets four tons

Press release

The Lake Monticello food drive Thursday (July 23) topped its previous best, netting 8,000 pounds of donated food for MACAA’s Fluvanna Food Bank, said organizer Betsy Gunnels. The food drive, organized by the Fluvanna Rotary, topped last April’s drive by 1,000 pounds, she said.

As a result, 12 large, fully-packed vehicles arrived at the Carysbrook Center, where more volunteers unpacked and re-stocked the food bank, which had requested the drive, saying the pandemic-related demand for donated food was depleting its stocks.

Earlier, volunteer drivers had scoured Lake Monticello for the food donations, and other volunteers had collected and sorted the food outside the Turkeysag gate to Lake Monticello. More than 70 volunteers were involved in the drive. “Congratulations to the citizens of Fluvanna for a job well done,” Gunnels said.
