Preliminary numbers from the Virginia Department of Elections show that 15,620 of Fluvanna’s 19,518 registered voters cast ballots in this year’s presidential race. This puts the total turnout at 80 percent, far exceeding 2016’s turnout rate of 74 percent.
In the one surprise of the evening, Democratic congressional candidate Cameron Webb carried the county by 134 votes. As of 9 p.m., Republican candidate Bob Good was ahead by a wide margin, with 3,702 votes to Webb’s 1,504. When absentee ballots were tabulated at 11 pm, Webb closed the gap and pulled slightly ahead.
However, Good still won the majority of the 5th District’s 330 precincts, with an unofficial final tally of 210,809 for Good and 189,820 for Webb.
President Donald Trump won Fluvanna with 52 percent of the vote, as did Republican Senate candidate Daniel M. Gade. Democratic candidate Joseph R. Biden and incumbent Senator Mark Warner carried the statewide vote.
Fluvanna voters overwhelmingly approved two constitutional amendments. About 70 percent of residents voted in favor of a nonpartisan redistricting commission and 89 percent were in favor of property tax relief for disabled veterans.
These vote totals are preliminary and may change slightly before the final numbers are certified on Nov. 16.
