The Fluvanna County High School indoor track and field teams traveled to Liberty University in Lynchburg on March 2 to compete in the State Class 3 indoor track and field meet. The boy’s team, coached by Steve Szarmach, had two impressive performances. Jaden Ferguson placed 2nd in the triple jump and the 4X400 relay team took 3rd. The relay team consisted of Ryan Hicks, Rocco Calderone, Nathan Valentin and Aidan Girard.
In the earlier 3C region meet on Feb. 17 at Heritage High, Ferguson turned in quite an amazing all-around performance. He was 3rd in the triple jump, 4th in the 55-meter dash, tied for 4th in the high jump and 4th in the long jump. The above mentioned 4X400 relay team was 1st at the Region meet. The 4X200 relay team of Calderone, Valentin, Girard and Ferguson took 4th place. In addition, Addison Patchett was 6th in the triple jump and Trace Harris was 6th in the high jump.
Coach Rose Brogan reports that two season best times were recorded at the Class C State meet. Shea Hart took second place in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.83, and the 4X800 relay team finished 3rd with a time of 10.28. The team consisted of Tallon Solga, Summer Craig, Emily Smeds and Evelyn DeMers. At the Region 3C meet, the girl’s team finished 6th. Hart was the Region champion in the 55-meter hurdles with a season best time, at that time, of 8.97 seconds The girl’s 4X800 relay team, as listed above, took 2nd place. Their time of 10:33.34 was a best of the year, to date. In addition, the following made all-Region by finishing in the top six. Hart in high jump, Smeds in the 3200m, DeMers in the 500m, Elle Dudzik in shot put and Olivia Farruggio in pole vault. Two other relay teams also made all-Region. The 4X400 relay team consisted of T. Solga, Skylar Solga, Ellie Kennedy and DeMers. The 4X200 team consisted of Hart, Hannah Feith, Rachel Warden and Kaitlin Bower.
