FCHS publishes 2021 Literary Magazine

By FCHS journalism

Defying a challenging virtual learning environment, FCHS has published its second digital Literary Magazine which showcases poetry, prose, artwork, and photography of over 60 Fluvanna County High School students during the 2021 school year. FCHS has been publishing the “Undefined” Literary Magazine for 17 years and has received several awards from the  Virginia High School League (VHSL).

This year’s magazine was edited by Literary Magazine Club President Mia Smith and advised by Journalism teacher Elizabeth Pellicane. Club members who assisted in the creation of the magazine included Mia Martinez, Hailey Leake, Kessler Potter, Tyler Harris, Edward Rackley, Maria McCormack, and Riley Yowell.

“Despite the learning curves of this school year, I think that we have a strong magazine to present. The authors and artists have done a wonderful job creating inspiring works,” Smith said.

Stories and poems were primarily submitted by students in the school’s creative writing classes, while artwork came from the school’s art classes.  Literary Magazine Club members selected, edited, and created the magazine completely online through Google meetings. This is the second year that the magazine has been produced in a 100 percent digital format.

“This year has been very different due to COVID. We could only meet virtually, which means we couldn’t do most of the work together, such as rating and selecting poems and prose. Virtual meetings were hard to plan around everyone’s schedules, so it was difficult to talk to everybody at once,” said Smith.

Fellow Club member Mia Martinez, who served as last year’s magazine editor, said, “I have hope that school will return to all in-person learning by next year and we can continue to work together. What I’m most looking forward to is printing and distributing the Literary Magazine, as we couldn’t for the past two years now.”
