A deck collapse at a home in the 400 block of Jefferson Drive on Saturday afternoon (June 26) left three Lake Monticello residents injured, according to Lake Monticello Volunteer Fire & Rescue (LMVF&R).

The 10-foot-by-12-foot deck fell 15 feet and initially caused some difficulties for the first responders to reach the scene, but these were “quickly overcome by our members, who assessed the gravity and severity of the incident and injuries,” said LMVF&R Chief Rich Constantino in a statement.

The injuries sustained by one of the victims was severe enough to require transport to the University of Virginia Medical Center  by helicopter. According to social media accounts, UVA’s ‘Pegasus’ helicopter was seen landing near the fishing pond at around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Two others were transported to UVA by ambulance.

LMVF&R said the victims were two adults and a child. No names have been released and there is no information on their condition.

“The speed, coordination and professionalism of both Fire/Rescue personnel allowed for the rapid triage, treatment and transportation, by air and by ground, of those with significant injuries,” said Constantino in an email to LMVF&R, praising responders for their “training and dedication to duty.”

The cause of the deck collapse is under investigation
