Spirit Run 5K and Cross-Lake Swim Highlight Lake Monticello 4th of July Events

It was cool refreshing morning, excellent for running, and at 7 a.m. on July 4  over 300 runners and walkers took off in the 19th 5K Spirit run, from the Bunker ball field. As is virtually always the case the winner in the men’s division was Matt Barresi. He finished well ahead of all other runners with a time 17:36. Barresi, who ran in college for American University has competed in 17 of the 19 Spirit runs and has won all 17. He now runs for the Ragged Mountain running team. His wife and children also run in this 5K with very good results.

On the women’s side there was, as usual, a new winner. Melanie Dorian was the first across the line. She reports that she was a recreational runner during here college age years, but that her primary sport at that time was cycling, and that she competed as a professional in that discipline. Dorian is a Charlottesville resident.

On a warm but not stifling afternoon the cross-lake swim was held as usual with 3 p.m. start time. Open water swimming was once a rare event, but it has become more popular recently. As all swimmers start together, the first part of the swim can be a little congested and at the finish line there were numerous comments such as, “I just kept bumping into that guy.” This race was dominated by the Dillman family out of Richmond. First out of the water was Cooper Dillman. He will be a 9th grader in the fall at Monacan High School. Next out of the water was his big sister Shannah Dillman who is a rising senior at Monacan. The third to finish was Carleigh Dillman, who is a year behind Shannah.

As with the 5k, the cross-lake swim included competitors of all ages with age group winners from 7 and 8 to 65 and 66 and over.
