The club champions at the Lake Monticello golf course were decided on Aug. 14 and 15. On the men’s side there is now a 2021 open mens’ champion, a senior champion and a super senior champion. On the womens’ side only an open champion was decided.

The men’s open champion is high school junior Killian Donnelly who shot an impressive 69 on Saturday and hung in on Sunday with a 77, for a two day total of 146. In second place, seven strokes back was Matt Heffer who shot 76 and 77 for a two day total of 153. Heffer was the defending champion. He won the open division in both 2020 and 2019. The best net score in the open mens’ division was a 140 posted by Justin Sullivan. The open division played from the white tees.

In the mens’ seniors competition (age 55 and over), Chris Farris came in with scores of 85 and 78 for 163, which was one stroke better than the 164 posted by Bo Patterson. The best net score was 147 posted by Paul Boisvert. The seniors played from the newly established orange tees.

In the mens’ super senior category (70 and over) Dave Murrow was the winner with scores of 84 and 80 for 164. In second place was Dave Darlington, who shot 85 and 86. The best net score was turned in by Everette Horton, with scores of 76 and 73. The super seniors played from the gold tees.

There were only two entrants in the womens’ competition. Apparently, the women golfers at Lake Monticello considered that the winner of the competition was a foregone conclusion. Sarah Johnson won the title for the fourth year in a row, shooting 86 and 76 for a total of 162. Golf pro Mark Marshall said that Johnson is “in a class by herself” among the women golfers at Lake Monticello.

The winners of the gross and net competitions were awarded store credits for use in the purchase of merchandise at the pro shop. Second place finishers in the gross score competition also were awarded store credits.

Golf has been able to proceed through the pandemic with only a minor closure of the Lake Monticello course. The game is played outdoors, and players are able to keep their distance from each other without too much difficulty.
