Press release
The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Fluvanna County Public Schools concerning some social media messages circulating regarding vague threats of violence. As of this moment, they all appear to stem from a previous altercation between students at the high school, which the school handled in accordance with its policies.
This appears to have led to other unsubstantiated overheard third-party messaging conversations, speculative text messages, or other messages have been proved false. It appears the messages are feeding off each other, compounding as they circulate, and leading to an abundance of false information being circulated.
We continue to work with the school to attempt to locate the source of this information when new messages circulate. In an abundance of caution, we have increased patrols at the high school in efforts to ease tensions and foster a safe learning environment. We strongly urge people not to participate in rumors and speculation. Posting unsubstantiated information online leads to public panic and makes it more difficult for law enforcement and school officials to sort fact from fiction.
