With the start of the school year fast approaching, Fluvanna County Public Schools welcomed their new teaching staff at an orientation breakfast on Monday morning (Aug. 1).
“I’m thrilled that you’re here and I’m excited about the school year to come,” said Superintendent Peter Gretz to the almost three dozen new staff members. School will start for students on Aug. 9.
FCPS has 33 new hires this school year, ranging from recent graduates to veteran teachers. Some are new to Fluvanna County, while at least two graduated from FCHS just a few years ago.
Executive Director Don Stribling said that between new hires and internal transfers, there are 35 to 38 new members on the teaching staff. There are also new employees joining transportation and student services.
The breakfast focused on bringing new teachers into the wider Fluco family, introducing them not only to the administrative staff and leadership teams from each school but also to members and representatives of the county government.
Fork Union Supervisor Mozell Booker, who spent much of her teaching career in Fluvanna schools, welcomed the newcomers. “You’re in for a real treat,” she said.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Jeff Haislip and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Amanda Galloway talked about their role in working with juvenile cases.
“We’re here to help these kids get back on track,” said Haislip. “We’re here to help the kids, and we’re here to help you.”
Sheriff Eric Hess explained that they had three school resource officers (SROs) on staff in the schools and had applied for funding for an additional two positions.
The event was informal and good-natured, concluding with Student Activities Coordinator Scott Morris tossing out t-shirts during a quick game of “Fluco trivia.”
“I’m excited about this school year,” said FCHS principal Margo Bruce. “I can’t wait to get rolling.”
