The Fluvanna High boys lacrosse team jumped to an early lead over Goochland County on March 21 and went on to score a 15-6 home win. Coach Will Bailey’s team showed excellent balance in scoring the win. Danny Marshall led the way in goals for the Flucos, scoring five times. He also recorded two assists. Cooper Tapscott and Aiden Valentine followed with three goals apiece. They each added two assists. Two goals each were contributed by Conner Jeffries and Cole Wiesenberger. Jefferies also had three assists, while Wiesenberger pitched in with two assists. Goalie Colton Ball made eight saves. The balanced scoring by the Flucos is a little unusual. Often when a team scores 15 goals, one player has seven or eight goals.
The Flucos dominated early and the outcome was never in doubt. In early play, they jumped to a 4-1 lead. As play progressed, Marshall showed great speed on one length of the field run, and then scored on a nice pass from Javier Campos for a commanding 9-2 lead. Wiesenberger then made it 10-2 on a pass from Jeffries. The Flucos quickly added two more goals for an insurmountable 12-2 lead. The teams traded goals but at the end of the third quarter the Flucos led 13-3.
Wiesenberger opened the fourth quarter with a low shot while cutting across in front of the goal, for an 11 goal lead, the largest of the game. As the game wound down in the final quarter, the Goochland Bulldogs scored several goals to make the final score a little more respectable for them. They would have had seven goals, but Ball made an excellent save on a point-blank shot by a Bulldog attacker.
The Fluco boy’s lacrosse team has not had much success since the sport was initiated recently. However, this was the second win for Bailey’s squad this season by a big margin. It is still early in the year and the Jefferson District is always tough, but it looks like the boy’s lacrosse team under Bailey, in his first year at the helm, will be able to hold its own this season.
