Fluco track and field teams start season strong

The Fluco outdoor track and field teams opened their season on March 25 by hosting the Fluvanna County High School Invitational. A total of 14 schools and over 600 athletes came to Fluvanna to participate in this major season opening event. The boys and girls teams are coached by Melanie Kennedy. She said that the meet was “a fantastic start for our season.” This meet was followed on March 29 by a six team meet at Monticello High. The Flucos also performed well there, as both the boys and girls finished second overall.

At the Invitational, several of the Fluco girls turned in outstanding performances. Sophie Farley was meet champion in the 3200m (two mile run) and finished second in the 800m with a time that qualifiers for the state championship meet at the end of the year. Fluco Ruby Frazier finished 2nd behind Farley in the 3200. Alexis Perry competed in a number of events and finished third in the high jump and 6th in the 300m hurdles. Anna Amato was strong in the 1600m, taking third place. Nevaeh Ferguson took fourth place in the shotput, while Nakierra Shelton was third in the discus. 

At the Monticello High meet, the girls team had two first place finishers and one second place finisher who also qualified for States. In the 1600m the Flucos were way too strong for the rest of the field. Farley was the winner, while Ruby Frazier was 2nd and Madeline Creasy was 4th. Another meet champion was Ferguson in the high jump. Perry was 2nd in the high jump with a height that qualifies for States. She also was 4th in the 100m hurdles. Other strong finishers for the Fluco girls were, Ellie Garrett 2nd in the discus, and Laura Hernandez 3rd in the pole vault.

At the Invitational meet, Richard Price was the best finisher for the Fluco boys. He came in 3rd in the 100m dash. Isaac Lewis posted fourth place finishes in the long jump and in the 400m. Kameren Green finished 5th in the 200m dash in a time that qualifies for States.

The Fluco boys did well at the Monticello high meet. They had two individual meet champions, And one state qualifier. Elias Morris was meet champion in the 800m run, and Logan Wade was meet champion in the discus. The 4X400m relay team was also meet champions. It consisted of Lewis, Davis, Green and Morris. The Fluco boys dominated in the100m dash. Price took 2nd with a state qualifying time. Green was 3rd and Lewis 4th. This was a six team meet and the Fluco boys took three of the first four slots in this event. Price also was 2nd in the 200 meter, while Lewis was 4th in that dash event. The same three out of four top finishes was true for the Flucos in the long jump. Wade was 2nd, Kenyon Smith was 3rd and Lewis 4th. Wade was an all-around athlete, with 3rd place finishes in shotput and triple jump.

Due to spring break, the track and field teams do not compete again until April 14 when they travel to Woodberry Forest. On April 18 they compete at Louisa County High.
