Press Release
The grand opening of the first all-inclusive playground in central Virginia is set for Saturday, Sept. 30, at Lafayette Park in Lake Monticello, announced the Lake Monticello Community Foundation, which funded the playground that’s designed to be used by children of all physical and mental abilities.
“We’re just so proud that we could make this happen,” said Foundation President Nancy Parsons. “This was a huge project to be taken on by a brand-new foundation, but the community has been just so generous! It’s true: This community is better, together.”
The playground is an extension of the existing playground at Lake Monticello’s Lafayette Park. It includes playground equipment specially designed to be usable by all children, including those with physical or mental limits. It also includes a special surface that can support wheelchairs and walking aids, as well as protect all children from falls. Other features include fencing and benches that make it easier for caregivers with limitations to monitor their charges.
The playground is on Lake Monticello Owners Association land and the Foundation and LMOA and its staff worked closely in designing and building it. “LMOA and its leaders, including Facilities Director Mark Lugar, have been just terrific throughout this process,” Parsons said. “This would not have been possible without that great cooperation.”
The total cost of the playground, about $100,000, was raised by the Lake Monticello Community Foundation through charity yard sales, talent shows, raffles, shredding events, and other fundraising activities over the past 18 months.
The grand opening event will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 30 at the park and will include inclusive activities for children, light refreshments and an opportunity to tour the new facility. Attendees are encouraged to wear white t-shirts for color activities.
