The Fluvanna High volleyball team hosted the Hornets from Orange County High on Oct. 17 and traveled to Louisa on Oct. 19 to take on the Lions of Louisa County High. The outcome of both matches was the same, with the Flucos winning both matches three games to none.
In the first game of the match against the Hornets, the Flucos started well, winning the first four points. The Hornets bounced back to tie the score at 4-4. As the game progressed, the Flucos opened a lead and were never in danger, leading by 13-6 and 19-10. The final score of the first game was 25-14. It was clear that the Hornets were going to have a problem dealing with the Flucos sophomore kill shot specialist Molly McCall.
In the second game, the Hornets were more competitive. They were even with the Flucos early and in the mid-game took a brief three-point lead with the score 11-14. The Flucos bounced back, however, to tie the score at 16-16. A kill shot by McCall put the Flucos ahead. A McCall serve that hit the top of the net and fell straight down on the Hornets side made it 21-17. From that point on, it was the Flucos in control, outscoring the Hornets 4-2, for a 25-19 win.
In the third game, the Fluco were dominate. They scored the first six points and were never challenged. In mid-game, they led 15-3. The final score was an easy win, 25-10.
Coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett said that the following statistics were recorded for the match with Orange. McCall had a strong performance with 11 kill shots and four service aces. Fellow sophomore Elizabeth Garrett recorded three kills and four aces. Senior Brenna Rea served three aces. Senior Alexis Perry had two aces, two kills and 11 digs. Junior Jillian Davis was a dig specialist, as usual. She recorded 15 digs. Senior Isabelle Garrett contributed in a number of ways. She had five kill shots, 13 digs and 17 assists, which are set-ups for the kill shot hitters.
After the win over Orange County, Harlow-Garrett said she felt that her team played well against an up and coming Hornets squad.
In the 3-0 win at Louisa, McCall again had an impressive stat line. She had nine kill shots, five aces, three blocks and 10 assists. Davis had six aces, three kills and 15 digs. I. Garrett had eight kills and 12 assists, while E. Garrett had three kills.
The Flucos regular season is winding down. They hosted Mills Godwin High on Oct. 23 and traveled to Goochland High on Oct. 24. The final match of the regular season will be at home against Monticello High on Oct. 26. The Flucos are now 15-4 but still are not sure what the region play-offs will look like. Region play will be on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
