Gary L. Ellis passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 29, 2024.
Born August 6th, 1933, he was the son of Lee and Miriam Ellis, and grew up in Mount Joy, PA.
He was married for 52 years to Elizabeth J. Ellis, who resides in Palmyra, VA, and is survived by 3 children: Gary Ellis Jr (Katie) in Sparta, NJ; Leann Eison (Ben) in Lititz PA; and Karen Snyder (Dave) in Lititz, PA; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Gary was hired by the PA Department of Public Welfare, and then devoted his career to public service, primarily in the mental health field. He was the Assistant Director of Harrisburg State Hospital for 11 years, and later became CEO of Danville State Hospital for 7 more years. Outside of work, he enjoyed time spent with the many animals who found their way into his life, especially his beloved dogs and cats. He retired to Virginia and began his next chapter living on the lake in Monticello, woodworking, telling stories (true and false!) to anyone who gave him an audience, and convincing his grandchildren he was indeed Batman.
He will be missed, and he will live in our hearts forever. Per his wishes, there will be no service, but donations in his memory may be made to the Fluvanna SPCA, Hospice of Piedmont, and the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue.
