Fluvanna Happenings: Did You Know?

Fun Fact of the Week: You might automatically think of the Mississippi when I say the ‘longest river in the USA,’ but that title actually belongs to the Missouri River! It winds along for a staggering 2,341 miles across seven states. The Mississippi is only a mile shorter, though, at 2,340 miles, so it’s nearly as long!

May is coming up, and it’s chock-full of events to go to! Make sure to mark your calendars–I’ve gathered up the first couple weeks’ of events here.

Silver and Gold

Silver and Gold is a recent development in the Lake Monticello area, started by local Realtor Peggy Shanklin. This cooler-than-average senior group meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Ashlawn Clubhouse at 10 a.m. On April 26, they will be at Cuppa Joe at 2 p.m. to enjoy a nice mug of coffee together, and then that night, will be meeting at the Batteau Restaurant at 5:30 before heading over to see The Savannah Sipping Society in Scottsville. Busy busy bees!

Community Talent Showcase: LMOA

Lake Monticello Owners Association is putting on the Community Talent show, graciously hosted by the Sts Peter & Paul Church, on Saturday, April 27! This fun event will also include Villa Nova pizza, soft drinks, and cold beer! There will be performances by F.O.G., Jefferson Speedboat, and other celebrated local groups. Tickets are $25 a person, or you can reserve a table for 8 people for $250; find tickets on the LMOA website, or by emailing LMCommunityFoundation@gmail.com.

Pleasant Grove Carnival

The Parks & Rec Pleasant Grove Carnival is back! Come and enjoy the classic fair food, carnival rides, and games! Both entry and parking are free; a ride armband is $20, or $1 per ticket. The fair is open 6 p.m.-10 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, May 8th and 9th, 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday the 10th, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday the 11th. Bring your kids, or come with your partner for a cute date night–fun for the whole family!

Central Virginia Health & Wellness Expo:

The Louisa County Chamber of Commerce, Louisa Forward Foundation, and Louisa Parks, Recreation, and Tourism are putting on an expo for health and wellness in central Virginia on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Betty Queen Center. This event is free and open to all ages! If you’re one of the first 100 people there, you’ll receive a reusable bag. Come out and enjoy information, screenings, and live demos, along with a selection of food and beverage options for purchase!

Groovin at the Grove

On May 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Park, the Atkinsons will be coming to Palmyra for a night of music! Melding roots, country, and rock into their own style of rambling swing rock & roll, the Atkinsons tie heartfelt storytelling into their songs, complemented with three-part harmonies layered over mandolin, fiddle, drums, bass and electric guitars. From country, mountain, and bluegrass, to straight-up rock & roll music; the sound ends up being quite a musical stew. Enjoy the music while you’re at the carnival!
