Store Openings: The Royal Cheesesteaks is now open on James Madison Highway, right next to Papa Jim’s Ice Cream! They specialize in Philadelphia-style cheesesteak subs and New-York-style pizzas.
Fun Fact of the Week: the most common trees in central Virginia are the loblolly pine and the yellow poplar. You probably recognize the loblolly pine; it’s the tall, spindly-looking bare trunk, with the branches and needles clustered at the top!
Music Bingo

Jam Thicket
Jam Thicket is back. This eclectic, psychedelic band is described as having material that ranges from “rhythmic rock and hypnotic sound-scaping, to infectious funk and up-tempo freakouts.” They have Dave Hersman on guitar, trumpet, and vocals; Warren Jobe on drums and devices; and Dan Haig on bass and vocals–plus there will be one or two special guests along for the ride! Live at Luna Azul Farms on May 11. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the music starts at 5 p.m.
Back 40 East
For those of you who may be thinking that Jam Thicket is a little out of your comfort zone, I’ve got your back. Check out Fluvanna County’s own newest rock-and-roll band, Back 40 East, playing at Wahoo BBQ on May 18 at 7 p.m. This band’s classic style works both for those who grew up listening to the oldies and for those who are just getting into it now. Come support your local musicians and grab some barbeque while you’re at it.
Muffins with Mom
On Mother’s Day, May 12, at 11a.m. the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association is hosting a celebration of moms and other motherly figures at the main beach at Ashlawn Boulevard. There will be free muffins and flowers for all–including gluten-free options. And dads, don’t feel left out–next month will have a Donuts for Dads event. I’ll talk more about that next time.
