Kennel cough hits shelter

Fluvanna SPCA urgently requesting dog foster homes

The Fluvanna SPCA is urgently calling for residents willing to foster dogs as they deal with an outbreak of “kennel cough” at their facility on Union Mills Road.

Mycoplasma cynos is a bacteria that leads to a respiratory infection in dogs. It is transmitted through droplets as the dogs cough and sneeze and can spread quickly in the close confines of a shelter.

The SPCA says that most dogs will recover without medication, but a few will require antibiotics.

In the meantime, they need to stop the spread.

“We are doing our best to isolate the sick dogs, but unfortunately, we are struggling to have the room to properly isolate the sick from well dogs,” the shelter said in a weekend Facebook post.

Removing the symptom-free dogs from the shelter is the best way to bring the outbreak to an end.

“If you have no dog at home, we would be very happy if you could foster one of our symptom-free dogs. As a foster, you are provided what you need to care for the dog as well as any medical needs.”
