Fluco girls destroy Goochland Bulldogs 59-8

It was a massacre. Fluco Coach Josh McElheny’s team has very little height and no bulk at all. What it has is a lot of solid athletes. It is hard for this team to let up on an outclassed opponent because the bench is nearly as good as the starters. The Flucos outscored the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter 17-0.

The Fluco girls are now 7-6, with three losses to private school teams that can recruit. They still have most of their Jefferson District schedule to contend with, so their season is still to be decided. Most of the Jefferson District teams will be considerably more formidable than the Goochland squad.

In this game, the Flucos’ man to man defense kept the Bulldogs from getting off any easy shots and it forced steals and turn-overs galore. In addition, the Flucos were hot from three-point range. They  sank seven threes, five by sophomore guard Sienna Brennan. Sophomore Sophia Brennan had one three, as did senior Ikeena Spruill. Sienna Brennan led the scoring with 17. Spruill was next with 13 while sophomore Ameyah Agee chipped in with 12, mostly on break-away lay-ups after steals. Sophia Brennan had eight points.

The game was over almost before it started. The Flucos jumped to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and then completely dominated in the second quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 20-1, for a 36-4 lead at half time. In the second half, there was a running clock as a form of a mercy rule, but the Flucos still managed to score 23 in the second half.

The Flucos are very young. There are only two seniors on the eleven-person roster, Spruill and Carly Brown who did an excellent job of running the show when the Flucos weren’t fast breaking and had to go up against the Bulldog’s zone defense. Aside from Spruill’s scoring, all but four of the Fluco points came from sophomores.

The Fluco girls played at Charlottesville on Jan. 21 and hosted Heritage Lynchburg a non-Jefferson District opponent on Jan. 22. On Jan. 24 they will host the Louisa Lions. On Jan. 27, they are at home against Wilson Memorial in another non-Jefferson District contest. On Jan. 28, they will host Western Albemarle.
