Kathleen Bunce Whitney, 69, of Palmyra, Virginia, passed away on January 22, 2025, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was born on April 21, 1955, in Washington, D.C., to Dr. John Daniel Bunce and Marjorie Ann (Sullivan) Bunce and grew up in Annandale, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Whitney; daughter, Denise Whitney; son, Kevin Whitney; and four grandchildren: Tyler Whitney, Austin Whitney, Brienna Whitney & Thomas Gannon Jr. She is also survived by her siblings: John Bunce, Brian Bunce, Terrence Bunce, Mary Anne Foreman, and Patricia Ayers.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master’s in Counseling & Education from James Madison University. Kathy dedicated her career to helping others, working as a Personnel Manager at Softech Industries and later as an Employee Relations Specialist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Kathy loved arts and crafts and never missed a chance to celebrate family and friends’ special occasions. She was an avid reader of crime dramas and suspense novels and a devoted fan of Judge Judy. She was a member of the Palmyra United Methodist Church and the Rivanna Lions Club.
Despite health challenges, Kathy faced life with resilience and humor. Her home was always open, her wit always sharp, and her spirit always strong. She valued kindness, connection, and laughter.
A memorial service will be held February 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Palmyra United Methodist Church (PUMC). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PUMC, P.O. Box 15, Palmyra, VA 22963, or to the Rivanna Lions Club, c/o Secretary Misti Harris, 13 Jefferson Dr. Palmyra, VA 22963.
Kathy’s love and laughter will be deeply missed but never forgotten. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of warmth and strength.
