State Senator Ghazala Hashmi won a narrow victory in Tuesday’s Democratic primary (June 17) to clinch the party’s nomination for lieutenant governor.
Hashmi beat her closest competitor, former Richmond mayor Levar Stoney, by just over 4,000 votes statewide.
In Fluvanna, Hashmi won 35 percent of the vote, with Stoney coming in at 26.3 percent, and State Senator Aaron Rouse with 17.8 percent.
In the attorney general’s race, Fluvanna gave Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor 56 percent of the vote, with former Delegate Jay Jones coming in with 43.8 percent.
However, Jones won statewide by 51 percent.
A total of 1650 ballots were case in Fluvanna, a turnout of 7.5 percent. The statewide turnout rate was 7.7 percent.
Hashmi and Jones will join gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger on the Democratic ticket in November’s general election.
The Republican ticket has already been selected, with current Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears and conservative radio talk-show host John Reid running unopposed for the governor and lieutenant governor slots. Incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares is seeking reelection.
The general election will be held on Nov. 4, with early voting beginning Sept. 19.
