Fluco cross-country competes in huge meet at FUMA

The Fluco cross-country team hosted a five-school meet on Sept.17 that Fluco coach Melanie Kennedy described as basically a warm-up for the multi-school team meet at Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA) held on Sept. 20. Top finishers for the Fluco boys on Sept.17 were Jack Jeffries and Noah Day. Over 20 schools competed in the big meet at FUMA. The Fluvanna boys and girls varsity teams both finished in the middle of the pack at this meet that included public and private schools from all over Central Virginia.

Senior runner Ruby Frazier was the Flucos’ top performer, finishing sixth in what Kennedy described as a “highly competitive field.” She finished in an impressive time of 19:19.1 Also performing well for the Fluco girls were Izabella Campbell and Ellie Portman. On the boys’ side, the top Fluco was senior Jack Jeffries who ran the course in 17:26.4. Other good runners for the Fluco boys were senior Kevin Sloan, sophomores Levi Rensch and Timothy Smeds and juniors Chase Larochelle and Noah Cruz.

This meet also include middle school runners and the Flucos did very well in the younger races. The Fluco girls finished 3rd overall.  They were led by Hope Robinson, Ryann Birckhead, Jaelyn Hurd, Riley Kidd and Grace Wagner. Robinson and Wagner are in eight grade, while the other three are seventh graders. The middle school boys race to a sixth place finish. They were led by Reid Goodwin and Chase Botto. Others who ran well were, Josiah Grooms, Jason Bobbio, Logan Mauck, Kavion Walker and Bennet Allen.

The Flucos, who run their home meets over a challenging and hilly course at Pleasant Grove, have their next home meet on Oct. 9 when they host Chancellor High. The District meet is scheduled for Oct.22 at Charlottesville high.
