Caring For Creatures has been awarded gold for Best Nonprofit Organization in Charlottesville’s Finest 2025 Magazine. This is CFC’s second gold win.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering love and support of our amazing community,” said founder and President Mary Birkholz. Established in 1988 as a no-kill non-profit animal sanctuary, Birkholz’s diligence and lifelong commitment to abandoned and abused dogs and cats, along with the unwavering dedication of her volunteers and supporters, have been the backbone, heart, and soul of CFC. She has made every effort to ensure that every animal has a home filled with love, either at the sanctuary or with her.
Birkholz has taken in sick cats and built a cattery. Volunteers helped add a rehab area for feral cats. Now, dogs will have new indoor kennels. Everything Birkholz builds on her property supports the environment. She believes in sustaining the natural world. It is clear why CFC has won this award twice.
Birkholz also shared other exciting news. Caring For Creatures is now the exclusive voice for Animal Welfare on Cville Right Now’s ‘Ask the Expert’ forum. Birkholz will share her knowledge and insights, answer questions, and offer trusted guidance on animal care, behavior, adoption, and more. She will write a new article every two months. Her current article, ‘Helping Animals Heal and Thrive in Today’s Rescue Climate,’ can be found at https://cvillerightnow.com/ask-the-expert/.
