Press Release
The Fluvanna Historical Society presented awards Oct. 19 to community groups and individuals at its annual meeting held this year at the historic Bremo Slave Chapel.
Incoming President Kathleen Kilpatrick said that the newly created recognition program is fittingly named in honor of long time President Marvin Moss for his record of service to the county and its citizens for more than 25 years.
Thanking Mr. Moss for his “remarkable leadership and stunning example,” Kilpatrick added that, “our work here in Fluvanna is made possible by partners who step up and give their time and talent to strengthen this community and understanding and appreciation of our shared history and culture.”
Marvin Moss Community Service Awards were given to the Community Roots Foundation in the public history category for meaningfully and creatively advancing knowledge as the organizers of the first countywide Juneteenth commemoration, recognizing leader Nina Monroe, and Nadine Armstrong, Allison Unnerstall, and Horace Scruggs.
The Oak Hill Cemetery Restoration Committee was recognized in the preservation category for its years of sustained and ongoing work to reclaim lost graves and names, thus honoring the Blacks and African Americans buried at Oak Hill in West Bottom. Members honored include Melissa Hill, Nadine Armstrong, Horace Scruggs, Mahalia Johnson-Woodie, and William Woodson.
In the volunteer category, William Johnson was recognized for his generous gift over more than a decade of his work, skills, and expertise to the Society and other organizations in the community.
