Sheriff’s office warns of IRS scam

Press Release

The Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office has received over 20 accounts of IRS scam calls in one day (Sept. 19). Be advised phone scammers are calling Fluvanna residents pretending to be the IRS and demanding payments right away.

The scammers are threatening residents with immediate arrest if payments are not made that day. These calls appear to be coming from spoofed phone numbers and most likely originate overseas.

Do not send any money or provide any financial or personal information. Also, do not buy any iTunes or other gift cards to pay the alleged debt. The sheriff’s office does not arrest people for tax debts. The IRS will send you written notice if you owe a tax debt. The best thing to do is simply hang up the phone.
