Virginia State Police were called to the scene of a fatal plane crash in a Louisa County field at around 3 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 4).
The single occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as Timothy P. Henson, 70, of Palmyra.
The experimental aircraft had taken off from the Louisa County Airport (Freeman Field). The crash took place about two miles from the airport in the 400 block of Chalklevel Road (Route 625).
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) designates planes built by amateurs as “experimental.” Most are built from commercially available kits and follow tested designs for light aircraft. In 2017 there were about 33,000 experimental aircraft registered with the FAA.
Virginia State Police have informed the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board and continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
