Fluvanna County High School held its annual fall sports banquet Monday (Nov. 19) after a delay due to heavy rain and flooded roads.
As usual, Athletic Director Scott Morris acted as master of ceremonies. Morris started with a thank you to the many people who assist the sports program each season, including concession workers, bus drivers, athletic trainers, team physicians, and last but not least, the spouses and significant others of the coaches.
The format of the annual banquets does not change. Coaches are called to the microphone to report on their season and to announce honors received by their athletes.
Volleyball Coach Christi Harlowe-Garrett described her team’s season as “successful.” Her athletes won a number of District honors. Savannah Quinn was honorable mention All-District. Katie Morris and Lindsey Ward were named second team All-District. Christina Walker made first team All-District. Ward and Morris were honorable mention All-Region, while Walker gained first team all-Region honors. Harlowe-Garrett noted that JV volleyball was also successful this season. She noted that a middle school volleyball team was created for the first time this year.
Coach Cheryl Koltz said that the competition cheer squad had a good year, finishing second in the District competition and going on to the Region competition. Amina Wilson was All-Region and second team All-District.
Coach Rose Brogan reported on the girls’ cross country team’s season. She described the season as “very successful.” Two runners were All-District and two were All-Region. Hattie Lintecum and Emily Smeds were All-District runners. Emily Beckman and Smeds received All-Region honors. Additionally, Smeds was All-State and All-Central Virginia.
Coach Tom Casto said that the boys’ cross country team did not garner any individual honors this season, but he noted that he has a number of good younger runners coming up through the ranks.
The Fluco golf team is coached by Bryan Searcy. He reported that, with a team that included only one senior, the Flucos were able to finish third in the first District event of the year, win three District matches and have six golfers qualify for the Region tournament.
The Fluco football team had its most successful season in many years. Not surprisingly, Coach Mike Morris had a host of awards to announce. Honorable mention honors at the District level went to four offensive players and three defensive players.
Honorees on offense were: Nate Smith at running back, William Custer on the offensive line, Ahmed Opie on the offensive line and Elijah Bullock as placekicker. On defense the honorees were: Eli Hartzog on the defensive line, Smith at linebacker and Leukas Koczan as a punter.
Winning second team All-District honors were three Flucos in four spots. Prophett Harris was second team All-District at running back and Colby Martin was second team at defensive back. Joey Van Dyke was second team All-District on both sides of the ball, being honored for his play as both a tight end and a defensive lineman.
First team All-District honors went to three Flucos. Walter Stribling gained first team honors as an offensive lineman. He was selected second team last year as a sophomore. Malachi Hill and Harris were first team All-District at linebacker and defensive back, respectively. Harris’ first tea
m selection was a repeat of his 2017 selection. Most of these honorees were seniors this year, but Stribling, Hill, Custer and the kickers were only juniors. Morris noted that All-Region awards had not yet been announced.
He also said that the JV team had a good season.
Scott Morris announced that Coach Mike Morris was selected as co-coach of the year for the Jefferson District.
