FAST swimmers set personal records

When the Fluvanna Aquatics Sports Team’s (FAST) year-round team competed in the Jim Frye Invitational Long Course Meet in Richmond May 5-6, every swimmer earned at least one personal best time in the races, according to Coach Nathan Johnson.

The Caruso family of swimmers – Anthony, 14, Josie, 9, and Abby, 8 – had an exceptional weekend. Anthony competed in the 13 and over division, finishing in the top 20 in three of his four races. He finished seventh in the 50-meter fly with a time of 34.66 seconds by dropping 4.63 seconds; he grabbed 17thin the 200-meter backstroke after dropping 8.75 seconds and finishing in 3:09.62; and he came in 18thin the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 34.66 seconds, down four seconds.

Sister Josie dropped time in all of her 12 and under races, including 1.31 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke, 31.76 seconds in the 50-meter breaststroke, and 14.34 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle. Josie placed 20thin the girls’ age 9-12 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:09.33, down 3.15 seconds.

Youngest sibling, Abby, took top 10 places in each of her girls’ 12 and under events. She finished third, with a time of 51.42 seconds in the 50-meter butterfly; she dropped 16.99 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke to finish fourth in 47.72 seconds; her 50-meter freestyle time of 43.25 seconds (down 2.14) earned her a sixth; and in her 50-meter breaststroke, she dropped an impressive 34.06 seconds to finish ninth in 1:04.79.

The next long course meet is the 757 Spring Splash held May 31 through June 2 at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond.

Summer swimming has kicked off with twice a week practices throughout the month of May and daily practices through June and July. Summer swimming is open to swimmers of all abilities aged 4 to 18. Learn more at iswimfast.org.
