Recording life during Covid-19

The Fluvanna Historical Society is asking Fluvanna residents to record their thoughts, feelings, experiences and observations as they move through the Covid-19 pandemic. These records – written, photographic, artistic or on video – will be kept in the society’s archives so that generations to come may better understand what day-to-day life during these days of social isolation was like.

“Many of us are experiencing life very differently now,” said society director Tricia Johnson.  “A record of daily activities and experiences, thoughts, and feelings can help people decades from now understand what it was like to live through this pandemic.”

The society hopes to receive submissions of all sorts. “Some people journal in a very organized fashion,” said Johnson, “and their record of their daily activities will be quite helpful. Others,” she added, “may submit philosophical essays or perhaps poetry.” Johnson encourages local photographers to document their experience – using proper social distancing, of course; and hopes that some people will record videos of what they and their families are doing. She hopes the community’s many artists will also submit pieces inspired by these unsettled days.

Johnson expects families with children to be particularly excited about participating.  “We would be quite interested to see what children are thinking and feeling,” she said.  “Even a young child’s crayon drawing would be very welcome.” Johnson said her personal journal includes entries on the weather, her “victory” garden, the logistics of getting groceries, her concerns for local businesses, observations on how local, state, and federal government is handling the crisis, and how she is trying to contribute to her community.

People interested in participating can email FluvannaHistory@gmail.com or call (434) 390-1218.
