Fluco girls top Western; Boys fall in Polar track meet

The Fluco girls’ indoor track team turned in a strong performance on Jan. 21 easily topping the Warriors from Western Albemarle by a score of 77.5 to 41.5. The boys’ team did not fare as well, losing to  the Warriors by a nearly reverse score of 74 to 46. Girls’ Coach Rose Brogan said that it was quite windy and chilly outside when the meet began, but that it warmed up as the meet progressed and turned into a nice day.

In a dual meet, such as this one, the first place finisher in each event wins five points for the team, while second place wins three points and third place one point. In a relay, the winning team garners five points.

The Fluco girls had the following first and second place finishers. In the 55 meter hurdles, Shea Hart was first and Kimmie Bond was second. In the 55 meter dash, Kaitlin Bower was the winner. In the 500 meter run, Evelyn DeMers was the winner, with Tallon Solga close behind in second. In the 1000 meter run, Sophie Farley won by a second and a half. In the 300 meter dash Shea Hart was second, one second off the pace. In the grueling 3200 meter (two mile) run, Emily Smeds won unopposed. In the long jump, it was Kaitlin Bower in first and Hannah Feith in second. The Fluco also took the top two spots in the high jump, with Shea Hart winning, followed by R’Tia Payne. In the shot put, Elle Dudzik was the winner, with Caren Smith in second. In the triple jump, Kailin Bower was the winner. The Fluco 4X800 relay team also won. It consisted of: Summer Craig, Evelyn DeMers, Emily Smeds and Sophie Farley.

First and second place finishers for Steve Szarmach’s boys’ team were as follows: Tre Smith, Jr. won in the 55 meter dash. Smith, Jr. also won the long jump. Ayden Bland won the high jump for the Flucos, with Kristian Thomas taking second. In the boys’ shot put, it was the Fluco’s Rocco Calderone in first and Travis Morris in second. In the triple jump the Fluco boys also finished one and two. Addison Patchett had the longest leap with Ayden Bland in second. The Fluco boy’s 4X800 meter relay team earned five points for the squad. It consisted of the following: Ryan Hicks, Rocco Calderone, Nathan Valentin and Aiden Girard.

This was senior night for the indoor track teams. The following seniors were honored. Emily Beckman, Kaitlin Bower, Sam Clark, Summer Craig, Elle Dudzik, Hannah Feith, R’Tia Payne, Emily Smeds, Skylar Solga, Tallon Solga, Anja Vernatter, Daniel Bustillo, Rocco Calderone, Travis Morris, Bryce McCormick, Troy Stephens and Ryan Hicks.

The indoor track team had another Polar meet on Jan. 27 and the season is scheduled to end with a similar outdoor Polar meet on Feb. 3.
